IVAM Museum exhibition
Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). Valencia. Spain.
January 19th – May 2nd, 2012
More of a retrospective exhibition, “Sculpture of process” was shown at the modern art institute of valencia (IVAM), one of Spain’s most renown art museums. Here Berned showed his trajectory as a sculptor which began with box like forms to the giant “Head” works more typical of his current creative process.
“Size is never a random matter in the work of Arturo Berned nor is that of scale. One can imagine mentally the changes – nothing could be easier – and make what is small large and the large small until you realize that the sculptor exercises control of the dimensions which are in proportion to the content, that they should remain constant and not docilely admit change however simple it may appear for them to be carried out. The work rebels against the observer, possibly even before its own creator, claiming stature, complexion and weight and the result becomes the exquisite distillation of the brewing process. Processes once again!”
Jose María Lozano Velasco. Professor of architecture and curator of “Sculpture of process” at IVAM (Valencia, 2012)
