Proposal for the Four Seasons Hotel in Madrid, Spain
LARGE INDOOR SCULPTURE
The transformation of seven buildings of over a hundred years old, a full block in the historic part of the city of Madrid, is the restoration project that Estudio Lamela has performed, conserving its character while adapting its interior to new uses.
The whole includes a luxury hotel, the Madrid Four Seasons, in whose access lobby we can identify the attraction point around which the space is brought together.
This space reminds me of the former corralas of Madrid and inspires me to propose an object that captures the attention, having nothing to do with the surrounding architecture: neither classic architectural elements, nor materials, shape, volume or color of the built environment. Precisely through contrast, the architecture that surrounds it forms my proposal… or rather deforms it.
The sculpture is a composition constituted by four equal prisms, subtly interwoven, not wanting to touch each other, helping each other, first to not fall, then to take off… A quest for balance.
In these last few years, I have been interested in the creation of objects produced by the sum of many equal parts that result in a new entity, this strategy becomes a very powerful tool with which I can preserve the properties of the starting element, and, at the same time, develop a limitless plastic ability
The base in which it is proposed to support the sculpture is a large reflecting surface, providing the ensemble with a certain magic and mystery…, but this, today, has “no place”.
